CAIRO – BAND NAME ORIGINS

July 28, 2016

The band name, Cairo, was decided upon by Rob on the London Tube as he headed down to the Victoria Line from Euston station, one February morning in 2015, after Touchstone had initially announced a hiatus in early 2015.

He spotted a poster for an exhibition of photographs by Francis Bedford (1815 – 1894), entitled “Cairo to Constantinople” which were being shown in the Queen’s Gallery in Buckingham Palace from November 2014 to February 2015.

For him, Cairo briefly summed up, in one word of two syllables, what he was after with this new band – the grandeur and epic soundscapes inspired by the great sights he experienced on a trip to Egypt many years ago; the ambience and somewhat ‘strange’ atmosphere of the Nile, together with the quiet intimate, almost solitary, moments experienced in and around the tombs.
